This article is about the game itself. For the location in which the events of the game take place, see BattleBlock Theater (location).
BattleBlock Theater (formerly known as "Game 3") is a 2D platformer created by The Behemoth.
Story[]
- The main article for this section is "Story".
The Player(s) and their many best friends, including Hatty Hattington, are off on an adventure one fine day when they become shipwrecked on an island with an old, abandoned Theater.
The friends go inside to seek shelter from the rain and discover a Hat, which Hatty is forced to wear by the cats who inhabit the island. Because of that, he becomes their unwilling leader.
The cats then imprison the Player(s) and force them to perform at the theater.
The Player(s) must do whatever it takes to escape with Hatty, learning about the history of the theater and the hat in the process.
Gameplay[]
The Player(s) can customize their character by using 1 of 5 Head Shapes, with each of them having 64 variations (320 in total), and numerous colors; they can also equip 1 of 13 weapons to use (on Steam, it's 2 of 13, and they can be switched between once every few seconds).
The playable character can run, jump and fight - either using their arms/legs or a weapon.
Punching an opponent dazes them, whereas jumping on their head either also dazes or kills them, in certain Arena modes. Players can also help other players up ledges and, outside of the aforementioned Arena modes, freely stand on each other's heads.
Players can use their moves together to solve puzzles, and since there isn't a death penalty on using them on your friends (outside of Insane Mode), you're free to kill them from time to time.
Different weapons have different effects, ranging from explosive devices to objects that temporarily stay in the environment.
Levels feature different types of blocks, including ones that self-destruct and ones that have spikes, as well as other hazards, such as water and laser cannons.
The game has several power-ups, such as wings that allow players to fly around the level, and jackpacks that can boost players 3 times to locations that may otherwise be unreachable.
In Story Mode, there can be 1-2 players, and in the Arena, there can be 2-4.
Each Story Level requires the collection of 3 Gems to complete, but there can be up to 7 in a single one. There is also a ball of Yarn on each level.
Gems are later used to randomly unlock the 4 out of 5 types of prisoners and become able to play as them (with the remaining type being accessible by logging into the game every week or completing Furbottom's Features (on Steam)). Yarns are used to unlock Weapons.
There are also unlockable Achievements (30 on Steam).
Development[]
At San Diego Comic Con 2009, the game, under its working title "Game #3", was shown to have online gameplay with up to 16 players in up to 4 teams.
At the Tokyo Game Show, The Behemoth announced the game would definitely be making its way to Xbox Live Arcade, though they were unable to say at the time if the game would be released elsewhere (it came out on Steam a bit over a year later).
Like The Behemoth's previous game, Castle Crashers, there were plans to feature user-generated music from Newgrounds' audio portal.
A second trailer was released on February 1, 2010, revealing the final name for the game to be "BattleBlock Theater".
Reception[]
BattleBlock Theater received "generally favorable" reviews on Metacritic, holding a metascore of 85/100 on both PC[1] and Xbox 360.[2].
Trivia[]
- The gameplay of Battleblock Theater seems reminiscent of Alien Hominid's PDA game, with the latter having inspired the former.
- In The Behemoth's previous title, "Castle Crashers", Hatty Hattington is a playable character.
